Dereck Mpofu Speaks Out On Gender Based Violence

Local musician, Dereck Mpofu spoke out condemning gender-based violence at the 9th National Student Conference at the ZESA Training Centre in Harare yesterday.

Mpofu’s core message was that society should work towards ending gender-based violence creating a more supportive environment for the girl child and that services for reproductive health should be made more accessible to the youth.

“I aspire for a society where people engage with the mind as opposed to a society where people engage with physicality... one where people can talk things out and resolve them across all spectrums,” he said

Mpofu has been known for supporting causes against gender-based violence through songs such as Kumahumbwe and Mudzimai. Currently, he is the ambassador for the Ministry of Environment in Banket, Zimbabwe and he has worked with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other UN bodies.

“I have always made it a point to participate in such projects,” he said
