Sembene Across Africa- Harare Film Screening

Zimbabwe joined the rest of the African continent for the Sembene Across Africa film screening which was held on the 10th of June from 1500 to 1700hrs at TV yangu studios in Harare. Zimbabweans have been warming up to different arts initiatives such as the recently ended Harare International festival of the Arts (HIFA) and the EU Film Festival which saw fully packed venues.

Sembene Across Africa provides free community film screenings across the continent and African diaspora. From the 9th to the 11th of June Galle Ceddo projects, in conjunction with a number of African institutions, presented the Sembene Across Africa project, which was a three day series of public screenings, house parties and free streaming of the award winning documentary film Sembene! The film Sembene! celebrates Ousmane Sembene the ‘father of African Cinema’ who spent decades shaping a meaningful, visionary cinema for a newly independent Africa. To date more than 90 public performances in 30 countries have been confirmed, with more venues being added on a daily basis. All events feature a post film discussion with many introduced by scholars and filmmakers. More detailed information about the project can be found on www.sembenefilm.com. The project is motivated by Sembene’s unfulfilled desire to return African stories to African people.
