Celebrating One Voice: 1ZWI

Captivating, thought-provoking, awe-inspiring, satisfactory. These are all words used to describe the first ever edition of the 1ZWI poetry jam held last Saturday at the National Art Gallery. The turnout was phenomenal, at least for the Sanctuary Café and Wine Bar where the event was held and had one managed to be up by 10am that day they would they would have been able to catch a talented roster of exceptional artists.

Featuring at the event were personalities such as the Hey Hey Preacher, The Unspoken, KGTR Nele and the Prince and host sensational female poet, Umind!? The theme was “One Mic, One Voice” and it largely promoted unity not just in the circle of the present spectators but in society at large. The event was primarily hosted in order to promote the arts in Zimbabwe. And the event was a testament that there are several young talented artists within the country who possess inspiring potential of excelling in the fine art.

A reflection on several societal issues such as prejudice abuse and conformity to social norms was called for. The guests for the day had a wonderful time and Tanaka Mapondera, one of the poets at the event, had this to say– “The event was thoroughly enjoyable and interactive. I found it truly inspirational and dynamic, and I eagerly await its next occurrence”

Fortunately all those who were absent at the event are not sheer out of luck for the creators of the event have proposed to begin making it weekly. If you still want a taste of what these artists had to offer this weekend there’s a chance you might still be able to catch them in the upcoming editions.
