IALA to host Poetry Bash in September

The Indigenous African Languages Association (IALA) which is located at the University of Zimbabwe will host a poetry bash on the 15th of September 2017, under the theme ‘Keeping the Embers of Indigenous Languages and Culture Burning’.

The poetry bash is an effort towards ongoing efforts by the country to accommodate and promote diversity and inclusivity of all indigenous languages and cultures with a view towards their revival and survival. Speaking about the event, the organisers said that ‘Though the performances are open to all Zimbabwean languages, talented performers whose performances are in the minority languages and cultures of the country are particularly encouraged to sign up and perform at the bash’.

As a way of complementing this event, IALA is also calling for written poems in indigenous languages by the 15th of June 2017 whereby contributors are required to submit 8 poems in their language of choice which will be published. IALA is made up of artistic performers, lecturers, current and former students of the University of Zimbabwe. The organisation which is registered with the NationalArts Council primarily promotes African indigenous languages through literary arts.
